Product Description
The Macchi M5 was a single seater biplane flying boat built by
Nieuport-Macchi at Varese, this extremely agile aircraft was powered by an
Isotta-Fraschini V.6 engine with a top speed of 117 MPH. The Italians had
captured a Lohner type flying boat earlier in the war and this formed the
basis for the first Macchi designs. Because the aircraft design was a
'pusher' type with the propeller at the rear there was no need for
synchronisation of the 2 forward firing Vickers machine guns, this gave the
Macchi a 'fighter' like quality which made it more than a match for its Axis
opponents. Over 240 were built during the course of WW1 with some seeing
service post-war up until the early 1920's. The Macchi was primarily used in
the maritime reconnaissance role by the Italian Naval Air Service, however
it could also be utilised as a light bomber on targets of opportunity as and
when they presented themselves.
The United States also used the M5 during WW1 and it was in one of these
aircraft that Ensign Charles Hammann was awarded the US Naval Aviation
Service's first Medal of Honour, when he landed his aircraft under fire to
rescue a fellow aviator.
WOW075 flown by Ensign Charles Hammann and limited to 12 worldwide in
number, comes with GW064A British Tommy with football as a free figure
(picture attached) which will be posted out separately when it comes into
stock.
An Italian version of this beautiful looking aircraft will follow but alas
we do not have one on offer today.
